Log Cabin Home Builder Honored as One of the Year’s Top News Events

Log cabin builder, Blue Ridge Log Cabins, was honored this New Year’s Day as one of the year’s Top 10 News Events by The Fayetteville Observer. Staff members of the Fayetteville newspaper chose stories from 2011 that had impact and meaning in the surrounding communities. The log cabin home builder’s involvement in the ABC reality TV show is recapped by newspaper Features Editor, Jessica Banov:

‘Extreme Makeover’: Reality show rebuilds home for women vets

For one hot, sweaty week in July, TV crews from ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” descended on Fayetteville.

Barbara Marshall, a 15-year Navy veteran and former chaplain, was selected by producers of the popular reality series as a recipient of a dream home. Marshall operates the Steps N Stages Jubilee House on Langdon Street as a transition shelter for female veterans.

Hundreds of volunteers, community groups and businesses worked 24 hours a day to get the job done. South Carolina’s Blue Ridge Log Cabins led the way in replacing Marshall’s 1,288-square-foot home with a modern, two-story house with space to operate services for veterans.

While Marshall, her son and the Jubilee House residents were whisked away to Disney World, Langdon Street attracted plenty of spectators hoping to catch a glimpse of “Extreme” host Ty Pennington for a photo or autograph. Others just liked watching the construction process.

On July 21, the day of the “move that bus” reveal, there was even more star power: First lady Michelle Obama came to contribute to the house, bringing seeds from the White House to plant in the garden.

The two-hour episode aired Sept. 25 as the show’s ninthseason premiere.
